Fire pits are fast becoming the outdoor heating choice for many people. But it isn’t the least bit surprising because there is nothing more relaxing and soothing than being around an open fire during cold nights.

Every person on all walks of life enjoys the warmth and coziness that an open fire can provide. Aside from that, fire pits can be used to add great aesthetic value to your backyard and as well as use it as a barbecue grill. If you are looking to experience the benefits that an open fire can provide then you can opt to purchase a pre-made fire pit or you can build it yourself. Building a fire pit is relatively easy and you can do it yourself as long as you have the right materials and aware of the actual process. Here is how you can build your own outdoor fire pit:

* First you have to check with your local authorities (city, local fire department) first and verify the laws and ordinances that you should be concerned about before building your own outdoor fire pit. In some states, lighting an outdoor fire could be illegal. And just to be considerate, you may also want to check with your neighbor if they are fine with your plan to build an outdoor fire pit.

* Choose the location of your fire pit carefully. Make sure that it is not close to anything that could catch a fire such as trees, dried leaves, wooden objects and so on. Also make sure that there are no wires, pipes or cables underneath your chose location. If you are mainly using the fire pit as a heating solution, be sure that you have in a location where people can sit around the pit without getting too close.

* After you have chosen the location, it is now time to dig a circular hole. In order to measure accurately the diameter of the circle and make sure that it is a perfect shape, drive a stick into your desired spot, tie a string to it with a small stick at the end and draw a circle around the stick.

* Now you can start digging the hole with about 3 inches in depth. Now using the loose dirt from the hole that you have just dug, form a flat circular platform in the center of the pit. Be sure that you pack the circular platform very tightly.

* With the use of a concrete brick, build a wall with about 1 feet in height by stacking the bricks. Be sure that there is a breathing space between the bricks by about 2 inches.

* Now you pour quick sand or pea gravel into the hole that you just dug. Be sure that you choose the quick setting type of sand or gravel. The gravel will aid in the drainage process of the fire pit.

* Gather some wood and light it with fire and you can now enjoy your very own outdoor fire pit.
